I find its comaprative looseness more inviting. It’s more consistently melodic on a first listen than (at least to my ear) Rat Saw God is after several. The instrumental bits are engrossing in vaguely Grateful Dead-like way at times, although It’s primarily the strain of Neil Young shambolic Americana you mention that keeps me interested. The artless vocals give the songs a melancholy charm. Thanks so much for the review!
